Mediterranean diet revamped.
Today is the last day of National Nutrition Month. Much has been said about the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet. One of the countries in this region is Italy whose cuisine uses nutritious ingredients but sometimes prepared in an unhealthy way. To be sure you are getting the most out of your Italian feast, keep these tips in mind:
- Use olive oil to dress salads, drizzle on cooked vegetables or dip bread into. Avoid this oil for frying and roasting.
- Use whole grain pasta and eat smaller portions of it. About half a fist size (= ½ cup) is a more than adequate amount per person for one meal.
- Cook tomatoes rather than eat them raw. This makes the valuable nutrient lycopene bio available.
- Go easy on the cheese. By using a smaller amount of a strongly flavoured one you cut down on saturated fat while maintaining taste.
